TWL vs IS
BF2 has been rough going for the TWL clan, not all of us have enjoyed the successor to BF1942 as much but with the recent patches it’s become much more enjoyable. And while we are not fans of EA, we are fans of clanmatches almost regardless of the game played, the bout with IS was fun so let’s get on with the tale.
Invisible Soldiers was a bit of an unknown for us but as ‘TWL Aktuell’ reporter Tubbe wrote,
“Not much to say since the season hasn’t gotten that far yet but there are indications that IS and TGC are looking hot.
Next week we’ll be facing IS on Strike at Karkand and Songhua Stalemate. Both maps lack the attack heli which I belive will be to our disadvantage since IS seem to have some fierce infantry “
So we planned some nasty tactics to counter infantry, chose a few good spots on the ATC map and then we had our first surprise. 25 mins before start and IS requested a delay until 20:30. After a lot of grumbling about being on time and keeping a fellow clan waiting we agreed to postpone to 20:15. In TWL Dippen had major difficulties getting online, substituted by Hitman out of the reserve ranks.
We went online and had a teamkill spree as usual but to our surprise IS had problems aplenty with player disconnects, hardware problems RL and we had to wait until 20:30. IS, a tip – Don’t let anything like this happen again, such things can become a forfeit if you meet a clan less sporting.

We had our plan! We had the armor! We had the willpower! To the sound of eager calls of spawning where and “What was it I was supposed to do?”, we rolled down into the city and set up positions around the first flag. Somehow IS seemed to have forgotten there are mines and C4 in BF2 because we faced none on entering the city. Keeping back from the TOW at the square we set a tight cordon surrounding the first flag, overwhelming it with infantry. Capping it in short order we set about hunting down the MEC tank, we killed it even though it got my Abrahams too.
Dogie was all set on the Mec main assault position and raced in together with our unassigned infantry, getting the flag grey in moments as most of IS had spawned on the middle flag to push us back out of the city. But capping the flag was an entirely different matter as IS furiously fought for two long minutes, all I could see was the text scrolling up and displaying IS killing my fellow clanner. Revving our engines, Tubbe and me held position around the first flag with tank and APC holding off oncoming infantry as the Mec main flag finally turned US.
IS seemed to have lost a bit of coordination at this point, some going for the Mec main flag to recap it and some going for the front flag. Unintentionally me and Tubbe exploited this by rolling into the square, dying but getting the flag grey. IS recapped it quickly but the second US armoured wave turned the Square US and it became a hunt for the last survivors.
End of round 1, TWL 173 vs 0 IS

And now the US are invading? Into OUR city? Kill the infidels!
Setting up a hard defense along the first line, mines and c4 strewn about like sand on a beach, AT’s posting at strategic overwatch points. My tank rolling out, or rather backing out as I had the duty to drop some mines aswell down at the railroad tracks. As a tanker on Karkand facing APC and tank on the US side it usually becomes very interesting with 2-1 situations. The US should win every encounter but from my mobile reaction spot at the square I rarely even got to see the enemy armour. For the first ten minutes I fired perhaps ten shots as a burning APC or tank rolled into view, the TWL AT infantry making it hell to approach.
IS infantry tried to outflank but were hunted down by TWL opposites, IS jeeprushes tried to circumvent or burst right through but were also hunted down – once by myself as the jeep had gotten all the way around the back of MEC main. But all good things have an end, the first flag was lost and we were hard pushed to hang onto the square after a couple of fierce minutes defending our main from harsh IS infantry attacks. After a minute all we had was the MEC main as we just couldn’t get the men back on the front line fast enough. I nearly lost the tank rolling up on the square as it turned grey, rapidly hit by two missiles I had to back down or die.
So the fortress was established. Tubbe ran forth and mined the front entryways, I mined the back ramps, everybody else spawned pure infantry and attempted to gain higher ground. The MEC main is a bit tough on ground troops to fight upwards from. Eventually the clock ran out and we had held on!
End of round 2, TWL 95 vs 36 IS
Elated and jubilant, we were near bliss as just about every single thing we have had problems with in the past worked seamlessly. Cooperation, perfect TS discipline, spawns and having the right kit at the right place – Everything worked fine. IS had put up a good fight until this point, we knew to take them seriously but we felt invincible at that moment. A bit too soon actually…
Songhua Stalemate TWL as US, IS as China.
“This is a land of confusion.

Those words described just about the entire round. I saddled up as General Supreme Commander with fifteen rows of medals on my chest, little did my clan know they would prove to be fake. We got off to a good start, even though China had capped both middle flag we took their mettle and charged in. Both center flags swapped hands and turned grey over the round but IS was damn good at irritating our main. Hitman making a beautiful job of kamikaze hunting the China APC’s (the china chopper was damn good at that aswell to the chagrin of Tubbe) and being all around helpful.
Constantly I had to call our unassigned infantry back home to hunt down threats, fighting off three waves of helicopter paratroopers. The APC drivers having to fight their way out of the base on more then one occasion. Twice they managed to steal a spawning APC but Hitman was true to his name and hunted one down, the other died in a AT shootout. The fourth wave however managed to kill me and unseat me from the AA rooftop, from that point on it was downhill in the main as IS apparently went on all out attack, spawning 4-5 infantry.
IS spawned up on the AA rooftop and greyed the main flag, Franz Klammer and I running around eachother, only succeeding in getting both of us shot as IS infantry leaped down in the middle. We had lost the main flag but the time was on our side. With just the north village and a single surviving APC we held out for the remainder of the round.
End of round 3, TWL 54 vs 100 IS

Hells bells! Time to realize;
“Hand grenades flying over your head
Missiles flying over your head
If you want to survive get out of bed
You're in the army now
Oh, oh, you're in the army now…”
And so we were off, grim faces set in determination to win at all cost. Capping both middle flags in a hurry, the APC’s (Tubbe, Cavehobbit) facing their opposite numbers on the north flag and winning the battle with a single infantry support. South flag fighting off a jeep attack and Hitman in the heli seeking the Blackhawk.
All through the round that Blackhawk would cause us misery, flying so high above our base that the AA couldn’t get a lock on it and raining down troopers either on base or the middle flags. I don’t envy the pilot, flying blind in peasoup the entire round cannot have been fun. Anyhow, the middle flags changed hands occasionally, memorable moments include Dogie screaming his head of (twice) on the TS as he was killed and there was no spawn points close to the Temple flag – Talk about being deep in the game, hehe.
For the first half of the game we saw three infantry attacks on main, the first cost us some resources as scan and UAV was taken out (quickly repaired) and reinforcements (Hitman, Franz, Zebra) managed to clear the base. The fourth however was serious and managed to grey the flag area, I was still alive up near the AA nest and kept my head down. Spotting enemies, directing defense and actually bringing down the artillery dangerously close to myself onto the flag. It was only Hitmans timely parajump, his cool on the keys creating a squad and letting four TWL infantry onto the base that saved the day.
IS began to feel the tickets run away and did one last attempt to score some points, a jeep rush straight past the south flag into main past the AA nest where I was standing doped out into the commanders screen. I barely had time to exit that screen as the TS was alive with warnings to find a IS infantry with a knife coming at me. Spraying the entire clip, didn’t kill him so had to finish him off with the pop-pop of the silenced pistol. The tickets ran out for IS and victory was ours!
End of round 4, TWL 133 vs 0 IS
Net score, TWL 455 – 136 IS
Damn, that was a fun game. Intense and momentarily horrifying, very nice teamwork on our part and a very good opponent who certainly knew how to switch attacks from one point to another. IS is undoubtedly one clan that is hungry for more and have gotten the hard art of keeping the pressure up well in hand. All through the rounds we felt a constant push on all points, they did not give in without a fight. Lastly, I’d like to point out the ambiguity in playing this game that I feel is well put in this lyric.
“War! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
Peace Love and Understanding;
tell me, is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way…”
